ANJALI The World Of Lady A
(Wiiija) WIJCD 1132 / RELEASE DATE: September 2003 3 years after Anjali?s second self-titled album comes the exotic, ?The World of Lady A?. I must say this is a dramatic improvement from past efforts, with Anjali?s potential far more fully realised on this release. ?The World of Lady A? is more varied the melodies more potent and Anjali?s vocals far more expressive than we have heard before. Musically, the album shifts from her previous ethereal style into a more beat-driven combination of lounge exotica and glitzy 50s-style James Bond it-girl indulgences. Anjali?s favourite tool of expressionism, other than her vocals, is her sampler, with masses of Middle-Eastern drum loops and glittery production techniques added to the more authentic musical string arrangements. Her Indian culture also shines through on a quite a number of tracks, dissolving the general playfulness to give the album a bona fide world music edge. The funky brass of ?Turn It On!? is excellent, as is the enchanting electronica of ?A Humble Girl?, full of luscious melodies and strings, while ?Hymn To The Sun? is a break-beat driven classic, which is begging to be remixed as a single. ?The World of Lady A? is a lovable, dynamic album, which keeps on growing with every play, and it?s great to see an artist like Anjali making the step up into the real ?A-list?.
