Albums of the Year
So... was it a pretty damn good year in music? It was in Seattle. Still, I really only have one local group on the album-of-the-year list. What were your favorite albums released in 2002? I don't care how many choices you have... I just want to see how they matched up. Maybe I can find some others that I like through the list.
Here's Mine... in random order
Playgroup - Playgroup ... I seriously suggest you check this one out. It's funky-indie-reggae Massive Attack-style groove. Very well-done.
RJD2 - Deadringer ... hmm. This guy almost sounds like DJ Shadow remixing "B" Movie Soundtracks... Almost, but still quite original.
Minus the Bear - Highly Refined Pirates ... If you're a fan of seminal finger-tapped indie-rock with a slight electronic edge, you'll prolly love this album. If Aphex Twin, U2 and Pavement had a lovechild... It's a Seattle Band on Suicide Squeeze Records. Pick it up.
Royksopp - Melody A.M. ... Did anyone else hear a Swedish Zero 7 on this album? It's so dreamy, reminiscent of Premier Symptomes and Moon Safari.
The Roots - Phrenology ... Hip-hop does its best Phish impersonation. This album is so wild, I had to love it
Bright Eyes - Lifted (etc.) ... Well, this was good. Really, really good.
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the pink Robots ... It was more introspective than other Lips albums. Quite enjoyable.
Beck - Sea Change ... Wow. How sad can one indie-nerd get? Some of the most beautiful melodies ever to come out of heartbreak.
Runners-up:
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot ...I liked the story behind the album better than the album...
DJ Shadow - The Private Press ... For all the absolutely amazing tracks on the album (almost every one...) I couldn't manage to listen to it all the way through.
Okay, tell me yours! I'm looking forward to it.
