my transition into nu-jazz...
many people i've spoken to have experienced a similar progression into a new 'genre' of music that is nu jazz. although i am still primarily a trip hop fan, i find that these two categories of music have very similar characteristics - deep, bassy beats coupled with usually sexy female vocals (at least the triphop that i like)- the only difference being that nu jazz is a little more uplifting (funky, for lack of a better word).
it helps that i have a strong affinity to deep house (kaskade, miguel migs, etc.) that i find very familiar and appealing in nu jazz. some have commented that nu jazz is basically remixed versions of popular triphop tracks and i would have to agree to some extent, while others have chastised it as a bastardized version of jazz. (by now, you're prolly wondering what the point of this post is, but, wait for it, there is... )
that said, i want to ask other trip hop fanatics out there what their take on this genre is and if they have any suggestions for other bands/compilations out there that are similar to the ones i've found:
verve remixed 1 and 2 (by far my fav cause its bass heavy, although
it is basically jazz music remixed by house dj's)
hotel costes vol 6 (brilliant, bassy, cool funk - listen to 'come on' sket
remix, 'surround me with your love', or 'in black of
night' and you'll know)
aromabar (borderline triphop and nu jazz, very good)
although there is a compilation out there titled 'from trip hop to nu jazz', i find that those tracks do not do nu jazz any justice. (yes, i have very specific tastes in my music.)
those are the only complete CD's that i've discovered so far. comments/suggestions?
