Catbird is Billie Koppel?daughter of oldtimers Annisette and Thomas Koppel of legendary The Savage Rose?and her boyfriend Frank Hasselstr?m. They get help from Tue Track of Malk de Koijn, the Royal Danish String Quartet, and Steve Kramer, among others. The result is a fresh, invigorating trip-hop experience with great vocals that at times remind you of Beth Gibbons. If you think Portishead is hot shit, then you might find this music a little bit too "happy," but give it a spin anyway.
Personally, her voice reminds me more of Louise Rhodes or Emiliana Torrini than Beth Gibbons but I'm pretty sure that it is required by law to make at least one Portishead reference in every trip hop view. Their CD Sliding from the Moon is more on the Trip Pop/Poptronica side but it definately has some distinctive downbeat elements to it. I guess the best way to describe them is Moloko meets Emiliana Torrini with a little Goldfrapp added in for good measure.
