Pelican City
Athens based band Pelican City creates a cinematic backdrop of moody, downtempo trip hop sounds. On the latest album, Hip Hop DJ/Producer Brian Burton collaborates with guitarist Todd Monfalcone, horn player Josh Perry, and sax player John Bell. The combination of deep & heavy Hip Hop beats, melodic guitars, cinematic string arrangements, and chilled out horns create the scenery for the Pelican City's new album, Rhode Island. Burton started Producing and DJing about 3 years ago. He started out mainly doing Hip Hop projects under the alias Danger Mouse and has released 4 Hip Hop mix CDs available on Hiphopsite.com. In 1999 he was voted "Best Hip Hop Act" in Athens as a DJ, awarded by Flagpole Magazine. Then again in 2000, he was voted "Best DJ" in Athens also awarded by Flagpole Magazine. Some of the acts he has opened for include Outkast, Goodie Mob, Biz Markie, & an upcoming show with Dan "The Automator." After spending a summer in Chicago, he was inspired to create the first Pelican City album, "The Chilling Effect." This album, a soundtrack for a film that remains a mystery, featured a tripped out Remix of the Neutral Milk Hotel song "The Fool." The Chilling Effect was called "moody, noirish trip hop in a blunted, Portishead/Kruder & Dorfmeister vein" by MAGNET Magazine. The new album, Rhode Island, is the musical description of a place. Pelican City, Rhode Island is the city that the film The Chilling Effect took place in. The city on this album sounds dark and mesmerizing. The music takes you on a journey through different places in the city. Whether the scenery is beautiful or haunting, each place in the city represents an emotional experience. The new album Rhode Island reached #34 on CMJ's TOP 75 Core Radio Chart, and #56 on CMJ's TOP 200 Radio Chart. PC's song "Sesame Street" was featured on CMJ Monthly Magazine's Sampler CD along with Radiohead, Marilyn Manson, Outkast, Johnny Cash and more. Mixer Magazine says "Rhode Island is a beautiful melodic backdrop for a day of quiet bliss in any form."
